Let the Shepherd Lead

Reading this short work by Andy Davis does not give any kind of revolutionary understanding o f how to memorize Scripture. However, the usefulness  of this small volume comes in the argument that memorizing Scripture is worthwhile effort. As he says, “by saturating our minds with the words of God we best abide in Christ and have His word dwell in us.” To truly mediate upon God’s word, it seems essential that we memorize it.

Davis helps us Note that verses we internalize help us to hate sin and desire to fight it vigorously. Such verses transform our worldview from worldly to a more heavenly mindset. Additionally memorized verses become a treasure trove for us to utilize in all manner of ways as we go about the daily tasks of life. All of these benefits become a strong case against any of the excuses our wicked heart may offer against memorizing Scripture.

As he gets into the method in chapters 4-6, Davis offers advice that is not revolutionary, but extremely practical. It is a commitment to give time and attention to something that glorifies God and does good to others. From mentioning memorizing key verses as a good start to the practical steps on how to pace the memorizing of whole books, the method capitalizes upon repetition over time.   As Davis mentions, “saying a verse one hundred times in one day is not as helpful as saying it every day for one hundred days.” The basic routine is repeating yesterdays verse, repeating all the verses memorized together, and then repeating the new verse. This simple effort is what Davis labors to convince us is worthwhile. 

One of the most freeing thoughts was the point that we should allow ourselves to “kiss a book goodbye” so that we can memorize more Scripture. Th point is that we must stop rehearsing certain Scripture to make time and space for us to memorize more. Even if we lose proficiency the benefit of memorizing more Scripture should be our goal. 

Overall this a wonderful encouragement to memorize Scripture that I would recommend to anyone who would like to learn this important biblical skill.
